Girl Whatever
7 Mar - 11 April 2026
fountain arts is excited to host ‘Girl Whatever’ the first solo exhibition by Alice May Stewart.
'Girl Whatever' is for anyone who ate grass at playtime, wrote One Direction fan fiction instead of doing their homework, has sworn off dating musicians for life, cuts their own fringe, constantly gets compared to manic pixie dream girl characters, and falls in love with their situationships. This exhibition invites viewers to cringe freely, romanticise everything, and give in to the undeniable urge to overshare.
'Girl Whatever' brings together new work alongside selected pieces from previous years, including works made during her BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.
This is a coming of age retrospective, with the exhibition reflecting on girlhood as a performed identity, tracing the awkward, earnest and often cringeworthy transition from adolescence into young adulthood.
Alice May Stewart is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Grimsby, UK. Her practice explores themes of identity, femininity, class and relationships; drawing on her experience coming of age online and offline.
Working across painting, textiles and video, Stewart combines a whimsical, surreal visual language with colourful nostalgia and humour, using mixed media to blur sincerity and self-parody.
